It is a Phillipson "De Luxe" on the underside it reads P86F. It is a 3 pc. rod. I have include a few pictures to help with the discovery process. I have found quite a bit of info on Phillipson Bamboo rods, but there does not seem to be as much info on the net about the fiberglass rods. I did hop around inside this forum and found alittle info. Can someone help fill in the blanks? Thanks Ben

It's nice to have visitors from Clark's board. The P86F was an early 50s Phillipson fiberglass rod. These were the first generation of Phillipson glass. Even so, your rod has the standard "no rock" Phillipson reelseat and drawn nickel silver ferrules. I think these were the best ferrules made at the time. These items were essentially unchanged over the history of the company. Your rod had the premium wrapping and cosmetics of the day. There was also an "S" line of rods that was the economy version. These Phillipson rods were sold in lengths of 7½', 8', 8½', and 9'. The 8' and 8½' rods are the most common, although the three piece rods are not seen too often. Your rod was probably designated for an HCH or 7-ish weight line. Have you had a chance to take it out for a test cast? Tom

I bought it several years ago at an estate auction, then my wife got real sick, and it got packed away in the our cedar closet, (walkin size). Long story short, I am finally getting to the back of the closet. I thought I better take some time and investigate it before we got it out. From what I have read. They say Phillipson were some of the best rods to fish with in his time. One article I read said it really didn't matter if you had a expensive or economy rod. They all had the same workmanship. I know the bamboo rods have become quite collectible, are the fiberglass rods as well? Thanks Ben

At least you weren't requested to put a value on the rod. We had a New Member a few months back that had a Wulff and A 6' Phillipson we helped out, The story was he has a large collection of glass to offer I guess he made the right connections because I never saw the rest of the collection offered here. My wife thought it was the info I wanted listed, and not my notes. She even put in the add, (Here is some additional information I have been given by others). That was how I had it on my paper. Poor commication on my part, as a matter of fact after I got your post and thought about not listing the rod. The more I read about them, they may not be of great value, but a heck of a rod to fish. Hopefully you will get a good price on the rod. Like I said, the three piece rods aren't as common, so maybe that will help. And you should be able to get some mileage from telling your wife she sold the rod before you were ready. By the way, ALWAYS insist on insurance for fishing rods (or anything else you ship). No matter what disclaimers you put in the auction, you are the guy on the hook if the package is lost or broken. eBay and PayPal will side with the buyer. The insurance is to protect the shipper, so factor it into your cost. Tom

Master Guide Posts: 1623 (07/25/08 16:54:05) Master Guide Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Nice rod, I have two minty ones, one had a split ferrule on the female on the mid section that I had to replace the other I let Cornmus use awhile back, they are great, in fact fantastic 7wt rods and can easily handle an 8wt line with the proper reel (heavy Young) they balance perfectly and the three piece rods dont seem to come up often, I think they must have been early models, but I like them, they are much easier to travel with and compaired to the early two piece models I feel no loss or change really in rod action. Way underpriced for a really nice old 7-8wt rod really. Richard
