another line question |

Made another little Fenwick purchase of an FF756. Every thing I read on here says it is fast for the FF series. I want to get another line to use with it. I
have a 6wt. Clouser line but thinking about a 7wt. . Who makes the lower priced line that has the same type of taper as the Clouser?. I can't remember the
brand or name. Does H&H make something similar?

What about Headstart by SA

The Clouser is closer to a 7 weight line than a 6 weight (178 grains for the first 30 feet, according to the Rio website). I suspect the 6 weight Clouser
would work pretty darn well on the FF756. I like that rod with a Rio Bass line, which is a true 7 weight (185 grains) and only about 5% heavier than the
Clouser 6 weight. The SA Headstart lines are simililarly overweight as the Clousers, so a 6 weight Headstart would be a good choice too.

Thanks, That is the line. I read that it is 1/2 size heavier than a standard line. If the Clouser 6wt line works well on the 756, I may get a Headstart 5wt to
try on my 705 and for my son to use on his rod.

Headstart for FF705 | ||

How old/experienced is your son? I think it's way easier to learn and become proficient on a fly line that stays aerialized. Lines with long bodies stay
aerialized a lot better than WFs, and Headstarts have a very short head for their line weight. I like Orvis Silver Label WF lines; they have a long belly and
long rear taper, and measure about 1/4 or more heavier than spec. You might also consider a S.A. GPX DT5. (Do they make DT lines in GPX?)
Alternatively, you could go the other way for that FF705. It is a strong, quick taper. Could you think about a DT6 in XPS? Yeah, it's a 6, but it's supple, and made for stealth, so it might splash down less alarmingly than a regular DT6. I'm thinking of doing just this in a DT7 weight to get a better feel from my Hardy JET 8' 6wt. Just my thoughts . . . Fish on! Peter |

I got the rod (FF756) today and spent about 45min. in the yard with several lines. I feel like I made a pretty good purchase in the rod by the way. I cleaned
it up with soapy water ( It had been evidently stored and had some dirt/dust on it, and a beetle shell up in the tip section! It looks almost new now.
I first tried out the Clouser 6wt and it really seemed to fit the rod well. Very smooth and nice flex. Next tried a 444 peach 6wt. Didn't cast well. The line seemed sticky, probably the local high humidity right now. Next was an XPS DT6wt. Cast OK but not like the Clouser. I have been using the Clouser 6wt line on my other FF705 rod.when fishing warm water. I usually fish a 444peach DT5wt on it for trout. I have about decided to continue using the Clouser on both the FF705 and the new FF756. I am now pondering getting a slow sinking intermediate line to use with the 756 at times instead on getting the Headstart line. Any recommedations on that? As far as my son's casting skills, he is still learning. He really started getting the cast down this past year and now is laying out some decent cast to about 20-40 ft. He is using an 8ft 4wt. med/fast graphite right now but the line is an old cheap cabelas prestige 5wt line someone gave me. I want to get a better line for him and thought the Headstart might help with turnover of poppers and the bump would aid in pickup timing. Here is a couple of picts I took of him on July 4th. He was throwing some #6 Walt's poppers. He turns 15 next month.

Lawn casting is one thing but trying to fish treelined waters like the one in your picture gives me the DTs.
