A reminder that the cosmetics of the era are different as to size. Folks get used to contemporary-sized reels, either the cumbersome out-size large arbor, or the typical 5/6 size, which is smaller in diameter and sometimes width than in the 70s or before. That's because WF lines gained in use as the more or less "standard," so reels were sized for them rather than DT lines, which require more capacity. For its time in workaday reels, the Pflueger 1494 1/2 would have been about the smallest diameter used with a DT 6, and the larger diameter 1495 was very common for this use as well--and not at all oversize to the eyes of the day. Thus, (bigger than the 1494, smaller diameter than the 1495) the Martin 67, 67 SS, MG 7 or MG 7SS are all in the size wheelhouse for midweight fly lines. I've used them for years for anything from DT 5 to WF 7 on 8 to 9 foot rods. This same size range (basically 3 1/4 to 3 1/2) is typical of British reels of the era as well at any price/class point. Thus, the Hardy Princess (about 3 1/2, narrow spool) would be a common size for 6 weight, as would its knock-off counterparts. I use one with a DT 5 on an 8' rod (in fact, I got rid of the Hardy, which I was never crazy about, and kept the same-size knock-off, which is just as good a reel). Go to JW Young reels (the best quality/value of any British reel, or about any reels, period), and your 3 1/2" narrow spool is a great traditional size, as are many other Young-made reels of the era, all upwards of 3" diameter for a 6 weight line. The Young 1525 narrow spool (about 3 1/2") has to be one of the best traditonal heavy duty click pawl reels ever produced, ideal for DT 6 and backing. I've used one for years on an 8 1/2' 'glass for 6. These are later (80s) than your Fenwick, but comparable models from Young from the era or before will be in the same 3" plus size range. Multiplier counterparts of the time, like the Speedex, Orvis, et al made by Young are similarly sized.
Full-frame, pillared (cast body or pillar and plate) narrow-spooled reels are very much at home on fiberglass, and are great line winders besides, requiring virtually no attention to evenly spooling the line in contrast to smaller diamter, wider spooled, open frame reels. For the most common line sizes ( 6, 7, 8, 5 ) of the time, the traditional makers really knew what they were doing (palm-of-the hand size 3 1/4" to 3 1/2") not the rinka-dink little brook winches of the WF, light line era. I have a bunch of these sizes, also, but they are just not the all-around size and reel for an all-around rod like the Fenwick for 6, and to my eye they would look too small on it. (Of course small diameter reels were available in the 'glass era, but their intended use was different, still for midweight line sizes usually, but in situations--usually brook fishing for flippety-flops--where little to no backing was needed and the reel thought of only as a line storage device.)
