I am looking for patterns for using Snowshoe Hare hair. Can I use in place of deer/elk hair? It is a good dry fly material but other than "the usual" patterns are hard for me to find.
Thanks
DT

"Great minds" indeed...I've spent all summer tying in snowshoe hare on various dries. From the patterns I've turned up on the Web, I think
most folks use it as a sub for calftail: parachute posts, tailing, and wings. (For instance, it makes a nice wing on Trude style patterns. I've also been
using it as a wing for small Stimi's and the like.) Here are a few links I've come across:

Let us see what you come up with. |

I agree with sub for Calf Hair. BUT, I have learned that ONLY the hair right between the toes is the most water resistance. Some of the other hair will absorb
water, so be ware. It is perfect on my #32 Midges. ;-)

FG...good tip on selecting the right part of the foot...I've also heard that the dying process takes away some of its natural "floatability"
as well. BTW, some of y'all are fishing to some finicky trout: on my wild waters back East, a selective fish is one that makes me drop down to a #12

the #30's are winter time and the snow flies. But yes the Provo gets hammered so bad, the fish are smart. In the higher waters, a humpy or a wulff are
great! Even beetles and hoppers. The fish are small but hungry and not uncommon to hook a fish on a fly half it's size.

Here's one of my favorite attractor flies, and a great pocket water fly.

Very nice ties, Captain...those Trudes were what got me into this "hare" business to begin with |

Hi CreationBear!
That's natural cream colored. I've tied them with dyed snowshoe hare's foot a well, and the fish don't seem to mind. Thanks for the compliment and... Tight lines, Cap'n Bob

Hi deserttrout!
Yes. You can substitute hares fur where ever the dressing calls for elk or deer. I especially like it for wings on emerger type patterns. The only down side to hares fur is that it is difficult to use on sizes larger than number 12, but it's great for the smaller sizes. Another reason that I like it is that it binds down with the tying thread better. I usually place a drop of head cement on the butts after trimming. That seems to really hold them in, as they're kind of slippery like calf tail. Tie one on, Cap'n Bob

I've tried tying different patterns with snow shoe too. I've found it works fine with sparkle duns. spinners and compara duns. I'd imagine it could
make a good caddis wing too. I've tried combing out fibers, tying as is; tying in from the base; by the tips, etc... Any thoughts?

SD--
Far from an expert here, but I've been tying-in my parachute posts by the tips...seems to work well, except the natural lanolin in the hair makes it pretty slippery: if you need a big surface area to wrap the hackle, calftail or a synthetic might make a better bet. One issue I'm thinking through, though, has to do more with storage than fishing: hare parachute posts seem to get bent-up in the flybox more so than calftail, etc. |

CB,
My post are sheet foam I get from cartons that housed TVs , stereos and the like. As long as it's thin enough to roll, it's great. I cut a square and roll it between my thumb and index finger. It ties easily, holds up great; grips the hackle; is visible and never bends out of shape. Send me your address...I'll mail one out. -SD PS...I may try some serendipities with snow shoe wings this Sunday. I'm hoping they would suspend a bit...like a heathen.

How did the slys turn out?
I tied some Sally's using Snow Shoe Hare hair instead of the CDC.. I used yellow yellow hare hair for the dubbing. They turned out OK and the do float. Now I am tying some Tan Hi Floats from Al Beatty's book. They look better than the Usual. |
