Very nice, three piece 7 1/2ft 4wt? what did you do this time, shorten the females 1 inch each? Im already sold on your 7ft 9in two piece, gonna build one this
winter, now your doing another unusual modification. I like it. Clear wraps? what that clear mono type thread? Ive used it before for invisible repairs, what
are you using for thread on this one? Also who's agate stripper is this one from, very very nice.

thats a nice rod and nice length. the lightness in hand of a 7' rod with the (almost) reach of a 7'6" and its a four wt. i also like the idea of
the 7'9" 5wt.

Great looking rod- I'm a big fan of clear wraps and am seriously thinking of stripping my 7.5' 4wt Lami and doing a re-build with a slide band seat and
CLEAR wraps with light brown trim.
I love that seat and have used it on several builds- low cost and real nice quality on those PacBay slide bands. Lou |

The wraps are gossamer white silk. The agate is from golden witch as is the grip. The blank, being 3 pc is now a staggered ferrule. I trimmed the tip and the
butt.

...Very Nice!!... I'd be proud to show that off on the stream... What is your approximate turn-around-time and fee for a 3 piece (not staggered) design,
snake guides (not single-foot), standard carbide stripping guide (not agate), same clear wraps, grip, and dual ring reel seat...

Very nice!!
When I built my Lami 7'6 4wt I thought about using silk for a clear wrap instead of Gudebrod goldenrod thread for the slight yellow tint that I got, but I was a little intimidated by silk. Maybe next time........ I like the casting and fishing qualities of my Lamiglass blank so much that I'd like to find it's equal in both a 5/6 and a 2/3......any suggestions? Awesome looking rod! Dave, what length rod?

Hmmmmm.....maybe 6'5 to 7' in the 2/3 and 7'6 to 8' in the 5/6.
Either a Lamiglass or similiarly slow action glass blank from another manufacturer. |

Lamiglas has a 6 1/2' 3wt and a 7' 3wt.The 6'6'' is slower than the 7'.Lami also has a 8' 5wt that is one of my favorites.I have
trimmed them down to 7'6'' w/ a staggered ferrule that makes a strong 5/6wt

Thanks for all the info boarmountain, I really liked your 7ft 9in modification. However Im not a massive fan of staggered ferrules if I can avoid them and
produce a rod with a few more hours labor with pieces of equal length. Guess thats the difference in a hobby or retired rod maker and one who is making rods to
sell. Im gonna give your shorty 3/1 lami 4wt a go this winter, I already have the blank, but I will shorten each female and the butt by one inch and reduce the
male spigots to match the new females. I know its not cost effective and its not gonna interest someone building rods to sell, but I think the rod would look
better and be just as good with pieces of equal length. Guess that again is the difference in making a living with rods and being retired. Your work is
absolutely first class, that your using that gossamer silk is a real tribute to your abilities. I have boxes of that stuff for bamboo rod repairs, but hate to
work with it, takes me longer to get the raps just right etc than it would to do the spigots on such a rod. Very labor intensive if some members havent used
gossamer silk. Thats very impressive on what I see as a rod that was produced for a reasonable sale price. While Im not a big believer in single foot guides
except on some shorty spin/fly rods Ive made, I do like the concept of not stiffening the blank with two feet and the modern way they just look. Thought your
seat was a Pac Bay too, never even considered the golden Witch. Love the stripper, gonna have to order a few just to put away, very very very nice on that rod.
Thanks again, your postings have really opened some avenues such as trimming the tips and butts as well as perhaps the female ferrule sections to produce a unique rod from a standard Lami blank. Thanks again for being so open about who you produced such a lovely rod, Richard |

Rich,
I think if you reduce the spigot diamater you would weaken it too much(the spigot are hollow on the lamis). You would have to fill the spigot w/ glass before you reduce it. Maybe fill it w/ a piece of solid glass spigot material. I think that might change the action though, stiffining up the ferrule areas, creating a dead spot, similar to what happens w/ nickel ferrules on a bamboo rod. Worth a try though. Let us know how it turns out. Thanks for the compliment on my work. There are a lot of GREAT builders on this site, which makes me strive to improve my work. Mike B.

a while back i took a 7' 3 piece lami and extended it to 7'9" by using a graphite insert in the butt end. i guess you can call that a reverse
staggered ferrule. this rod casts a 4wt so sweet it will make you cry. you could do the same thing with the 7'6" 4 wt by extending it 3". not
quite so ''staggered"and might be the better option than what i did. lots of ways to skin a cat with those lami blanks and they are inexpensive
enough to justify some experimentation.

OK, I got the rod today, so here is a quick visual and lawn cast review:
Mike's finish for the rod is very well-executed. I have always liked very minimalist design in rods and most other things in life. I have always liked the look of blonde cane combined with blued hardware and clear silks. So I basically requested that of Mike, and he delivered nicely. I lawn cast it today with a TT-4 line and a 7 or 8 foot leader and piece of yarn. I can see how you Lami owners rave about the honey blanks. As Mike previously mentioned on this thread, he took a 7'6" 3pc blank and cut 1.5" off the tip and butt. Well I can't compare to the original full length version, but whatever, it casts great in close and out to 40-50'. Sweet spot is 20-30' as you might guess. Tracks straight. The thing that surprised me is how quickly the blank recovers relative to the few other E-Glass rods I have cast. It's definitely a glass rod...but you can push this one a bit more than others I have thrown. I like that. I think this rod and a few others I have cast recently have finally convinced me that I just like regular progressive action rods -- stiff or soft, glass or graphite. I have tried parabolic and dry fly tapers in a range of rods, and I just keep coming back to plain old progressives. So at least that mystery is solved for me. |
