Why is there a hex nut around the gear? (it is barely visible because of the old grease) Thanks

Picked up a Rolls/Herter reel....the spool seems to be a two piece spool...ie, there is a grove in the middle.
Why is there a hex nut around the gear? (it is barely visible because of the old grease) Thanks |

to hold the gear on
It's the '62-66 construction, the spools were in 2 die-cast halves, the bushing is threaded on the O.D and the assembly is held together with those thin nuts (maybe just one end is threaded and the second has essentially a hex head). The latch caps contain the bosses for the bar and spring, and the surface of the spool is flush - this is reversed from the earlier latch configuration. they started this on Valdex in '59
note that you could buy a replacement bushing (not that you'll ever need one)

Ok, just me, or is that one complex reel for the late 50s? Granted simpler than the turn of the century EVH you had Ron, but good Lord. That is a lot of parts.

the Valdex was sold as a kit, to avoid the early version of the Value Added Tax.

Thanks BD!!!
Is there a way to tighten the two-part spool assembly? There is just a slight play in the spool. Righty tighty on that hex nut? |

the run-out screw in the center of the latch plate.
Disengage the pawls and the spool should spin almost like a top. the run-out screw in the center of the latch plate, tightened against the spindle tip, should allow just the slightest end play. Tighten it until the spool starts to bind, then back it off to where you can feel that it's spinning freely. There is the possibility of a bent latch bar. This will show up in the runout adjustment as a the spool feeling free over most of the rotation and then binding up in one spot, or as a difference in end-play versus the rotation position. |

note that you need the correct tiny screwdriver for this adjustment

Wow! That worked. I had acquired a Shakespeare Beaudex and thought that the spool play was the effect of years of use. Well it's now back in working order
after using that technique.
BD, thanks for the fix. Les |
