It is my understanding that there is a noticeable difference between the feel/action of these 2 rods. I have heard the 5wt-3pc is softer in action and that the 4wt-2pc is stiffer. I have the chance to purchase one or the other. Do not have the chance to compare side by side. I would be using it mainly to fish wet flies (down and across) but of course would be throwing dries when needed. I also plan on using a DT floating line. Any thoughts/recommendations....no, I can't buy both!!!!! CF

I also swing wets/flymphs/nymphs, predominately. As I understand it, a faster-action rod / lighter line wt. is (usually) preferred for fishing drys? For me a 7-8' glass rod, in a 5-6wt. is the "sweet spot" for wet fly fishing... -- CoreyL

If I needed a dry fly rod, I would grab the 8ft 4wt. If I was going to throw soft hackles, nymphs streamers or even small/medium popping bugs, I would grab the 8ft 5wt 3pc.

Are we making a general comparison of the two rods and thier action?, or a direct comparison assuming the same line weight will be used for both? The 8ft 5wt-3 according to most, works best with a Sylke Dt 5wt or Rio Select DT 5wt. and is the Slower/Softer of the two. So what results would we find if we string up either forementioned lines in the same weight (5wt) with the Faster/Stiffer 8ft 4wt-2 Rod?...more or less the same? And if we string up identical lines with each rod but with thier intended line weight...how will these rods square off? -Ray

With all due respect to the others, I would have to disagree with any suggestions that the 4 wt. was limited in some respect. I bought mine with the hopes that it would be a very versatile rod for small to mid-sized streams, and it has turned out to be just that. I have been able to cast pretty much anything I want with it. Dries, nymphs and indicator, and any reasonable-sized streamers. I'm not the fiberglass aficianado that most here are, but it's anything but stiff to me. It's slower than even the supposedly slow graphites that I've owned and much more versatile in terms of the range of flies that it will throw.

I think it casts just fine with a 5wt. It's a strong/fast 4wt and with the progressive flex of the rod easily handles a 5wt as well. But, even with a 5wt it's still faster than the 3pc 8'5wt, imo. I put a 4wt on the 8'/5wt but i think it feels best with a 5wt line which gives it a smoother more flexing feel to it, again imo.

The 8' 5wt 3-pc is a very smooth, slow taper that really feels wonderful in the hand, though it wouldn't be my first choice in high winds. The 8' 4wt is a faster taper, and -- here in the West where the wind often blows -- might actually be a better all-around rod. The obvious solution is to buy both.

It seems though that the 8 foot, 5 wt Diamondglass is NOT available from the dealer who claimed he had one in stock. With that said, I went ahead and got on Mike McFarland's list to get an 8 foot, 5wt, 3pc Spruce Creek Fiberglass in the progressive taper. Decided on the Stream Grade, so all said and done, only another $75 for a custom made rod. He did tell me how busy he was, but I mentioned to him I was in no hurry. Not like I don't have other rods to fish!!! By the way, anyone here from the Baltimore, MD area???

Guide Posts: 172 (05/20/08 19:18:06) Guide Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I have the 7' 3wt 3pc DG, the 8 1/2 3 pc 4wt DG, 6' 5wt 2pc DG, and the 8' 5wt 3pc DG and the 8' 5wt is the fastest of the bunch. I fished dry/ droppers on a windy day on the Provo River this march and it performed well. It also throughs medium sized streamers and poppers on the bass/gill pond I fish regularly. Its the only DG rod I really love that I own, and I tend to like fast glass/medium action graphite rods.
