Where to fish around Bastrop, Tx or West of same? |
Lead | |
|
I will be coming over to Bastrop, Texas the second week of June, hauling a horse there, and will bring my rods. Any local knowledge of where to fish, wading or
shore will be greatly appreciated. Actually, am coming from El Paso, so that would include anywhere to the West once delivery is made. Just some simple
fishing, nothing special, so bank would be great, camping for a day or two. Glenn

Hi Glenn,
Try this link to Bastrop State Park; there's a lake there with sunfish, catfish, and largemouth bass. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/bastrop/ Les |

Hey Glenn! The park is just lovely for camping and hiking, but I haven't actually fished there. Will you be coming through Austin? If so, I could take you
fishing for dinky perch at the same place I took Les.

Hi Les and Curt. I kind of like the looks of Bastrop State Park. Also Buescher because the campground looks to be more convenient to the lake. Which do you
think would be the better choice? Dinky perch? Are they a cousin of my well loved sardine? Glenn

Assuming you're coming east on IH 10 to US 290 to Austin, then US 71 to Bastrop, I'd stop in at South LLano State Park near Junction, Pedernales SP
about 20 miles west of Austin on US 290 or Lake Bastrop. Personally, I'd go for the Llano.
The lake a Buescher is small and last time I was there was fairly solid with vegetation to the waterline, might make it difficult to fly fish w/o a boat. Bastrop is a little more open in places and the park has canoe rental. Bastrop, btw, is a cooling lake, so the water temp is warm year round. In fact, if you are here in June, you can wade any of the rivers with a pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet. |

Does the Llano have a resident population or would there be timing issue? The location is great, but the bass in Lake Bastrop sound good. Just one on those in
my frying pan and I would be content. Also the Pine woods sound nice for a day or so of camping. Over around Junction though would be less crowded, and it is
on my way home.

In any of the rivers it will be bass and sunfish, our only semi unstocked trout fishery is the Guadalupe, with some brief stockings elsewhere.

Glen; the South Llano is a great fishery; out of Junction. You can float from the little community of Telegraph back to the many canoe rentals, cabins, etc.
that are between Telegraph and the state park; or you can make the float from the state park to Junction. The river bass are plentiful as are brim. Wild
turkeys and deer can be seen at almost every turn in the river. The fish are not large but are fun on a light rod. One of my favorite places to stay is with
Charles and Shirley Goodman. They have some small cabins right on the river and will shuttle you up river for the float. They changed their name ; I think its
South Llano Cabins. Phone# 325-446-3870; good people; and you can watch the wild deer play drinking your morning coffee-p-

Take the drive to Buescher State Park.
The pond there is formed by two creeks. Wade in on the crotch between the creeks. There may still be rainbows left over from the winter stocking. If you want to fish here (Mueller falls on the Guadalupe), you'll be about 60 miles away - we might be able to meet up one day.
In fact, if you want to go farther west, I can point or take you to - no offense guys - better places than offered. Hunt
Headwaters of the Pedernales near Harper (these two places are 45 minutes apart)
I guess I look at water very differently than people with boats do...

Well BD, that sure sounds good. There is just not the opportunity to fish around here, so this will be a treat for me. The plan right now is to deliver the
horse at Bastrop on the 9th. Once the trailer is washed out it becomes my camper, so I can head in any direction and kill a day or two before the wife starts
wondering where I am. If we can connect that would be great, but if the timing is not right, that's fine. Still have a week and a half. Glenn

Ouch, that would mean a weekday - I might be able to get a day with enough notice. If we fished together one day, which would be your preference?

With this heat, I don't feel comfortable making any plans beyond just being there. I don't function well when it is over 90, and so I think that the
plan better be delivery mon. evening, fishing Bastrop tues. morning and then as it heats up, head for Junction and fish evening and wed. morning, then head on
back home, where it is 106 today, with more of the same predicted. Many thanks for your kind offer and look forward to meeting and fishing with you some day.
Some cooler day. Glenn

Hopefully the wind will die down as well, for the sake of your rig as well as casting. This past week has been like a windy day at the coast. Nothing like 97
degrees with 15 mph winds gusting to 30.

I'm telling you guys, you can get out of the wind and the heat in the cypress tunnels.

That does look good.
My first close encounter with the Hill Country was 42 years ago when a group of 14 year old boy scouts spent five days on a canoe trip down the Guadalupe. Obviously, things have changed a bit since then--we camped on the banks and hardly saw a soul the whole time--but its still pretty and now has trout. Someday again! I had tossed a three wt in the car Sunday, thinking I might find an hour or so during the week to tease a sunfish. I found the hour, but the wind got there first. Sheesh, not even an 8 wt was going to cut it. |

To those following this thread, BD has kindly provided me with directions to a spot on the river similar to the above. I have found a nice campground on the
Guadalupe nearby and look forward to a couple of days next week of excellent fishing and relaxing. Recipe for too much heat---cold beer and standing in cool
water---or is it cool beer and standing in cold water??? Glenn

Trip over, and it worked out very well. I stayed between Kerrville and Ingram, at a large campground, 40 acres with a 20 acre island in the river. All to
myself on the island. Ideal tent site shaded by a large spreading oak, just as the above pictures depict. One large cedar tree was 15 paces around at the butt.
Fishing was good, not only was there a variety, blue gill, smallmouth, and catfish, but there was a pesky turtle that would chase a hooked fish. I did not know
that turtles could swim so fast. It was as hot as I feared, so I stayed at the site and didn't leave to explore other areas. Waterflow was very slow. No
mosquito's. I will say that this river is loaded with fish, if very small. Another couple was fishing near me and the wife was fishing on the surface and
the husband was fishing on the bottom. She was catching nonstop small fish, several inches, and he was catching fewer but larger fish. Gills. It was really too
hot for me to work the fly rod all day. With more water flow, and ten or more degrees cooler weather, this area could easily be a good destination or site for
a get together. Glenn

Sorry about the heat, we're not enjoying it either. But then, you wanted some warmwater fishing
Glad the trip went well. |

Ah the memories...
I'm thinking of tree shrouded river tail outs with feeding guads and hub cap sized yellowbellies feeing in the current. Why would anyone chose sunbaked open water fishing over this? Note to self: it's only a four hour drive to Nirvana. Ron you are a lucky man indeed. |
