Key West, Florida in May |
Lead | |
|
Well...the in-laws are taking everyone in the family on a cruise and one of the stops will be Key West, Florida. I was wondering if any of our members here
have some local knowledge they would like to impart or a guide that I should look up for a 1/2 day trip. The trip will be at the end of May.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. |

Cameron,
Give Barry (evanslmtd) a shout. He used to guide down there. |

BONEFISH TRIP!
That McFarland 7 weight should be just about perfect - if you can find a reel that will take the abuse! Run, don't walk, to the library and check out a copy of "Fishing the Flats" by Mark Sosin and Lefty Kreh. That should get you prepared enough to go out with a guide. Tom |

Be sure you get a good fitting pair of flats boots. You'll appreciate them when you have to walk around coral, oysters and urchins.

Don't know Key West but I do know Islamorada. Capt Jim Wilcox out of Bud and Mary's Marina. Fished with Jim a few times. His website is
ultimatkeysfishing.com. Last june I caught specks on the fly until my arm was going to fall off. Don't limit yourself to just flyfishing when on the flats
you might end up getting just some sunburn. Tell whatever guide you get, what you would like to do but be flexible. Let the guide do his job, you'll have a
better day. Full day rates last year were 500 for a full day or 350 for a half day. Try to do a full day, half days are always a disappointment. Tell Jim I
sent you and don't forget to tell him "Fight him off the reel, Al"

Cameron, if it's Bonefish you're after, there are better places to fish than KW. As RFM, posted Islamorada, would be a better choice. However, if
it's Permit, Tarpon, and some of the off-shore Pelagic's (Bonita, Blackfin Tuna, etc.) you're going to be impressed with Key West. You might try to
get in touch with either Capt. Jim Thomas (305-292-1586), Capt. Bob Trosset (305-294-5801) or Capt. Nick Malinowski (305-745-2326) to see if they might have
and open day.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely!

I'm just a couple hours north of bonefish country, but the regular fare here in Sarasota on the flats can sure keep you coming back for more. You're
going to have a great trip.

If I were to hire a guide in the Keys, it surely would be Cordell. Here is his website: http://www.bonefishwhisperer.com/ Good Luck! |
