Slowest, Smooth casting rod??? |
Lead | |
|
I'm just curious in a glass rod : What is the kind of the slowest, smooth casting, full length type of bend, around a 4-5 weight, 7 to 8 feet long? What
brands/models? It would be what I would picture the type of rod an ol' feller would be using on a spring creek dry flying for native brooks. I realize
this is a broad spectrum and question, but it might lead me more to the type of rod that I want to purchase. I realize that most of those ol' dry fly
fisherman were using what we may percieve as a 6 weight and an 8' rod. I'd like to stay away from 'boo' though in this question.
Thanx.......Ray..........

trout fits here if you can find one.

Larry,
My 7 1/2 foot Heddon Pal #30 casts a 5 weight line (or a 4DT) and is a nice, slow sweet action rod. And, it was made in the '50s or early '60's so it's got that old tyme feel! I have heard some talk here lately about a Winston Stalker being very slow. That was my recollection too, but I only cast one once, have not owned one. Tom |

I've cast many, many rods and to me one of the nicest 8ft/5wts has been the 3pc Diamonglass. Maybe, not the prettiest but not bad, definitely not the most
expensive [much nicer than the $$$ T&T Heirloom], but it is slow and has been the smoothest in glass for that configuration. I'm looking forward to
comparing it to a Lyons 3pc 8ft/5wt in the next couple of weeks which are also said to be slow and smooth. The 7ft/4wt Winston Retro is also very smooth and
slow. The McFarlands I've cast have all been more flexing and smooth. I wouldn't categorize Steffens rods as slow when comparing these other rods. In
fact, while his rods are smooth I would categorize them more on the faster side of glass, at least the few I've handled. Also, the 3pc 7'6"/4wt
Hardy Perfection is probably the slowest of them all. Some of the rods I've mention are out of production. If you want a slow/smooth rod and don't want
to spend 'boo' prices I'd look at makers using "E" glass that are charging very reasonable prices for their top of the line work i.e.
Dave Lewis and Dwight Lyons to name a couple.

While I love the 7 1/2 ft Lamiglas 4 wt as my favorite...my recommendation in response to your question is a relatively obscure rod from Garcia called a Garcia
Conolon S-636. It is a 7'3" rod, labeled for a 6 wt but it is really slow even with a 5 wt. This is a great brook trout or panfish rod that allows
you to enjoy a long and slow backcast with everything up to and including large poppers. Full flexing. The kind of rod that allows you to change the target
of the fly, even in midcast.
It is a 2 pc, metal ferrule, relatively low end rod but it is sloooww and smooothh, which is what you asked about. If you can find one, you can probably get it pretty cheap. I have two of them and they are worth way more than I paid for them. But, you have to like things sloooww. |

Thanx everyone for the input, All these old rods and all the auctions etc., etc., how in the He** am I gonnaa find the rod I would like? Glass is becoming a
popular intrest and not even in the fly fishing community. A buddy(if you want to call him that) knows I'm looking for older glass fly rods. He said he
went to a garage sale this morning and bought two fenwicks for four dollars. That pissed me off as I have been asking around about some old closet leaners. He
wants to use these rods for putting on a Penn reel for minnow dunking for crappie. I told him, He** I've got plenty of rods that will serve that purpose.
And he walked off like he knows something about fishing. Hey, all whom fish with minnows will know something about fishing.
Raybow................... P.S. I just need to buy from yall that have what I need!................?????????????????? |

Slow and smooth huh, well the 1950-1959 Narmco Conolon Fanwing was rated a 6wt but handles a new 5wt DT just fine as well. Its 7ft 10in long, weighs 4 ounces
and as Narmco said it has "English type long slow action". I think this is one Tom and I chated about some time ago, you can almost not believe how
slow these babe's are. I think they were so the old timers could fly cast real worms without tearing them off the hooks during casting or something. It
really takes some getting used to but alot of fun once you do. Slowest glass rod I have.

Tom,
From what he said he was looking for, the FF756 would probably be a bit too fast. Maybe you could send them to him for a try though. Donny |

Many good choices.... | ||
|
Raybow, you can't go wrong with any of the choices suggested. Since it hasn't been mentioned I would suggest a Powell glass rod, But, alas, they have
been out of production for years and would probably be expensive if found.
Sweetness and light in my opinion. Gentle yet powerful. Mr McFarland makes a parabolic action available in his lineup.

Donny is right, the FF756 casts more "graphite-like" than other glass rods..... The Heddon however, is a slow action rod. I have only lawn cast it,
but I'll bet with a good fish on, this rod would be a LOT of fun! Please just pm me if interested.
Oh, and I'd love to have a Walton Powell glass rod to match my two Powell 'bamboo' rods! Anybody got one!!?? HA! |

Yes....I'll trade | ||

Fisherofsmallstreams I'll trade my aforementioned glass Powell for a bamboo Powell Companion.

Thanx to all for the help and advice, but I've got a feeling a question like mine are going to be very frequent. I'm going to adjust my work schedule
to be off on Saturdays to see some of these $5 dollar rods;)

I have to second the vote for the 8' 5wt Diamondglass rod, which is so smooth it's exactly like smearing butter on Sophia Loren.
Last year I used it to fish a small spring creek with (big and small) dries for brookies and browns. At one point, I was throwing a good-sized foam hopper, and I think soft, smooth 5wts offer the ability to throw much bigger flies accurately. I haven't yet cast one of the McFarland paras, though they positively ooze small stream brookie class.... |

Since it has not been mentioned, I will bring up one of the board favorites in this range...Heddon Pal #8381. 7' 5wt rod. Also, you can find a decent
Wonderod in this range also.

Hey Ray...take a day and come up here. I have a closet full of glass rods. You can try them all on my tank and figure out what you are looking for. If you
want something slow...the fenwicks are probably not going to interest you...except something along the line of the FF79. But you can try 'em all, along
the the Phillipsons and other rods I have here.

50s Phillipsons, like the 7 1/2 and 8 footers for HDH lines. The Chieftain, the Pow'r Kast, etc. Leisurely, full flexing and sweet, and not nearly as much
tip bounce as might be expected. 5-6 weights.
They didn't use to be so pricey...still cheaper than the 60s-70s models, though. |
