Why I Love Glass Fly Rods |
Lead | |
|
Yesterday I received my latest Evilbay glass rod purchase, an 8'6" True Temper two piece rod made in the good old USA. I can't find any info on the number in the Johnson book so I'm unsure about it's age and blank build. It's all white with red and black wraps. Some may say the wraps are gaudy and ugly, but I like the character of these older style wraps. It feels much lighter than I thought it would and has a wonderful feel. These rods have tons of personality and character and will deliver the fly beautifully. The best part, it was $17.50. How can you beat that ?

Gearboy,
You are exhibiting the first signs of addiction. Unfortunately, its too late, from now on the only withdrawals will be from your bank account. That true temper is probably a pretty decent rod and you'll fish it and have fun with it and the price is great. Then you'll hang around here awhile longer and begin to wonder are the silaflexes good, then everybody seems to think the Fenwicks are good, then you'll notice some these guys have lots of Phillipson's and realize that Andy can build a much better rod on that Spectre blank than you ever could and....... Back away from the reels, slowly and carefully back away from the reels... Hayden |

Gearboy, I know exactly what you mean. The postman just brought an 8 1/2 foot H&I Mohawk Rainbow that has spotless cork, good ferrules and wraps, and pretty red thread. But, the reel seat is plastic, for goodness sakes. Very Strange. $11.50 plus shipping. I have got to stop going to eBay!! I have to wait until these gale force winds die down before I snow(lawn) cast it. It sure passes the wiggle test, though.
Come on Spring!! Wacokid54 |

"Fly Line Recommendations for 1965 Model Fly Lines"
by Scientific Anglers Inc., Midland Mich. Great chart with lots of info. Someday I'll transcribe it all... It came out of an old United Flytyers Roundtable magazine. Cheers, Alec |

waco,
Remember that back when that rod was made...plastic was brand new! It was the latest thing! Only years later do we associate plastic with lower quality. |

pave - I can relate to how things change re value. Around a hundred years ago, when Bakelite was invented, it was a prestige thing and I think some jewelry
even used it (not as costume jewelry, neither). When the Hall process for refining aluminum was commercialized, aluminium (as the Brits still call it) was a
precious metal.

I have one of the last True Temper steel rods made. I am sure it was their top of the line rod, a 7 1/2 ft for 6 wt. Built like a car antenna with a baked
epoxy covering and...a beautiful swirled plastic reel seat...the state of the art for the day. A terrific caster, by the way.
You are right about bakelite...I picked up a very nice fly reel that looks and sounds great. If you haven't checked recently, you may want to look at bakelite jewelry if you think it has gone down in value :-) |
