I say be thankful she loves flyfishing with you. I know first hand what it's like to lose some of my favorite rods. I've lost 2 lamiglas drift type rods (graphite) and 2 of my glass fenwick gear rods to my wife. She got hooked, fell in love with my backup rods, and I can't have them back (as she says). So, you may just want to keep that to yourself.

I learned fly fishing from my best friend's family who had also fished for generations. I recall his wife fly fishing for bluegills on occasion. The best, however, was that my best friend's dad had a bit of a regional reputation for his casting prowess and would give presentations in high school gyms around the state. The big finale was for his wife to stand with a cigarette in her mouth at one end of the gym and he would snatch it out with a 50' cast. Now...

It was a pre-requisite that I learn to fly fish before marrying into my wife's family, which has fly-fished for generations.

With 3 young children now, we don't fish together too often unfortunately. But when we do, after 30 minutes without a strike or fish, she's typically put her rod down and is birding with her binoculars in hand.

That said, most of her fishing needs are met with an early Orvis Far & Fine 5 wt and a Scott F-703/2. Yeah, I been known to...

Last year I bought a mint 1980s 8' Fenwick graphite thinking it was glass...it wasn't. But, it was such a sweet rod that I decided to keep it and added it to my wife's arsenal. She asked why when the other rod was still good. (9' St Croix) She still doesn't understand the purpose of a boatload of rods and reels.

My girlfriend is just starting the whole flyfishing thing. The first rod I stuck in her hand was fiberglass. She doesn't know the difference between glass/grass/broomsticks, but she did fish the Granger you sold me over the weekend.
By the way, the rod's name is Cofisher! I don't care what rod she ends up with, it is just a blessing she is out there casting away with me without complaining!

Auntie Em: I think deep down inside I would love to have her start tying her own flies and pick which rod and reel she wants to use. She does often choose which waters we are going to fish. I guess that's a start.

I'm one of those fly fishing wives.
Must confess, I started fly tying first, ONLY as a way to enable my husband to fish ... had to find something for him to do after he retired, so he wasn't hanging around the house all the time.
First time, however, that I flung that fly .... well ... it was all over but the shouting! He now ties his own flies, I tie mine ... and I build all our rods, graphite, glass and bamboo,...

my girl is an excellent tyer.she does fish now and then ,mostly to test her flies.she has her own SA graphite six weight,but prefers my graphite LL bean travel rod.the only other graphite rod i have is a sage that she "prefers not to use."she doesn't have an interest inusing my glass or grass rods,but is supportive of my collecting and she likes to look at them.reels and line kind of leave her cold.i kind of wish i was that way,haha

Time away from the wife is important; we are not joined at the hip and never have been. I'm damn glad she has zero interest in fishing, altho she'd like for me to show some interest in doll collecting ...

Fortunately, when we travel there's always water available for me to escape to.

My wife loves to fish and has picked fly fishing up from me. She use graphite and has kind of taken "possession" of my T&T LPS. My wife isn't as devoted to it as I am and isn't physically up to the demands of a lot of water, but we find ways to make do. I'm happy to have around even when helping her takes time away from when I could be working a hole. We see it as a chance to be together.

OK, I gotta comment, I love my wife and we have fly fished together manytimes, she has an Orvis graphite from the early '80s, but really,is nice to get away some too, and I fish a lot more places without her, places that require heavy wading, or rough hikes, or just plain slow fishing.

Once my wife figured out she loved to fish it was all down hill from there. It reached the point that I couldn't hook up to the boat without her sensing it and being in the passenger seat by the time I got the lights hooked up. Guys I'm telling you; after a while I couldn't even look at it without her asking where we were going and when we were leaving. I don't complain either though. I sold the boat instead.....

First off, welcome to Shawn. If I made my own rods I would be less likely to even worry about my wife wanting bamboo or a nice glass rod. Shawn, if you haven't already done so, check out the where I'm from and where do I fish post at the top of this category. Evil minds want to know.

Guys, don't misunderstand me, I'm very thankful that my lovely wife enjoys fly fishing almost as much as I do. I'd rather fish with her than anyone in the world right now except...

I'm also fortunate to have a wife that loves to fly fish, but we have two children under the age of 6 so we have to take turns fishing. I love having them out with me so it is a great time.

But, I have the exact opposite problem with tackle. I have been building fiberglass rods for about two years. I finally built her a really nice 7'3" tadpole. She hasn't fished it yet. So this winter I started building PMQ bamboo rods. Well, she saw the first 4 bamboo rods...

Out of idle curiosity, I was wondering how many of you have spouses/significant others who fish with you and do they use glass, graphite or cane?

My wife is fairly hardcore...um, let me rephrase that...my wife loves to fly fish and doesn't miss a road trip. She uses graphite, knows I use glass and cane but hasn't shown any interest in switching or even trying the others. Should I introduce her to them or consider myself lucky that she isn't begging to use my favorites...
