Ray, sounds like you have yourself a nice one. Some of those late GCs are as light in the hand as any graphite. I think many excellent rods are overlooked--venerable or otherwise--because they are thought to be of too heavy a line wt. Your gain!

It has the black wrappings trimed in white and an cork grip. The reel seat is black as well. The rod loads good with a 7# WF for my needs. Some would say that is to heavy of line. But it'l roll over any wind resistant fly in the box. Thanx yall for the info........Ray...........

If it has gold colored hardware and a black foam grip it's the top of the line rod.

Hi Raybow, there were at least three different Black Conolons without stars, the first two were from the 1960s and were their lowest line of rods, one being solid fiberglass the other hollowglass. The last model was not numbered 2494, it was the very late high grade rods, with solid glass spigot ferrules. They were the top of the line glass rods for that 1979-82 period, however Conolon at that point also had higher priced Glass/Graphite composites and even higher priced all Graphite rods as...

Is the black Conolon top of the line because there is no stars on the rod? It is 8' dry fly action 2464. Does this number represent time of manufacture?....................Thanx.................Ray.........................
