1. Spline

Orienting the guides opposite the spline will (in theory...) result in more casting finesse, correct?

Has anyone found that guide orientation in relation to the slipe affecting a rod&#39;s best lineweight?

This blank I have is rated a 4/5, but I really want it to be a 5.

If I orient the guides on the spline, will this help?


2. Wood Inserts

This is my first time with a wood-insert type seat. Is Rod Builder&#39;s epoxy ok to use to... ]]>

			<description><![CDATA[ Think I&#39;ll start with the last question and work up.

According to some blank makers I have talked to, wrapping by the ferrule isn&#39;t absolutley necessary with today&#39;s technology.  That being said, I still
wrap the ferrules.  My personal preference is to wrap within 1/16&quot; to 18&quot; from the end.  Most builders recommend a wrap approximately two times the
rod dia. at the ferrule.  What works for you and looks good to you ought to be fine.

			<description><![CDATA[ The best way to answer your question regarding the spine and guide placement is for you to tape the guides on the rod, string it up with a 5 wt line,  take it
outside and cast it a bunch to see what you like best.   If you like the way the rod cast w/ the guides placed on the spine then go with that.   If you like
the way the rod cast with the guides positioned 180 deg opposite the spine then go with that.   If the blank has a curve in it that doesn&#39;t follow the
spine then you could tape... ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ The rod bends both ways in the cast so I put the guides on the spine, which I identify by deflecting the tip to test the oscillation.

I glue the reel seat hardware together separately. Later, the cork grip is glued on the blank or the assembly is glued on, but not both together. You can&#39;t
have the components shifting and the already glued component will anchor the other when it is glued. I insure the reel seat is in the proper position on the

			<description><![CDATA[ 1) Rod spine - I put my guides on the softest side of the rod blank with the idea it will not twist or roll during a forward cast.  There are as many different
ways of orienting the guides on the rod blank as there are rod builders.

2) I use rod builder&#39;s epoxy or 30 min epoxy to assemble the reelseat.  I prefit everything before I mix up the glue.  Glue up the reelseat first, or glue
the insert on the rod blank first, or do it all at once.  It doesn&#39;t matter.

First off their are two opinions on where to locate your guides vs the Spline. Alot of thinking says the Spline is the backbone of the rod, thus offers the
greatest resistance to bending. With the Spline oriented as the backbone and the guides 180 oposite you will get the most sensitive full flexing rod. On the
other hand if you locate your guides on the Spline you will end up with a slightly stiffer... ]]></description>
