Thanks for the comments everyone, and I stand corrected........hmmmm so Common Shiners.....well that sounds even better than a Chub, and is better than calling them "Another one of those" which is how we referred to them on the water

Common Shiner (Notropis cornutus). I drew and painted these a few years ago for a field guide. For me, the interesting aspect of these fish are the very steeply-angled, diamond-shaped scales, with dark shadow-like marks at the forward edge of each scale that make it look like the scales have been attached backwards! Great photos and story Mark. Without sounding like a trout snob, way to make what looked like a failure into a successful trip. The rods and reels and little whatever they were are great looking.

That was a fine trip. I used to live up there. The tribs to Lake Superior have steelhead runs. Good smallmouth fishing in the shallow bay just west of Ashland, not a bad fly-rod caper. As with most places, some of the trout streams in the region are way overrated, the Namekogan being one of them. There is a resort down there--I can't think of the name--that has a great Sunday buffet, but after that, you would just go crappie fishing on one of the many little ponds in the area. There is no...

Doc-that looks like a great day on the water-beautiful scenery,wonderful company and some really nice tackle. If you're up in the Driftless Area again you should call Rich Osthoff in Mauston. Rich has fished the area since childhood and knows the water and the trout as well as anyone.Fishing the Driftless Area with Rich as my guide is on my bucket list.

I just watched the TU show "On The Rise", and he did a show about trout fishing in WI. I believe it was in the Driftless area.

When I used to live in Chicago, I found trout in SE Wisconsin and around Madison. I always wondered about what Wisconsin trout fishing might further north. I guess not much better. I remember the day when I first came across a group of very large spawning brown trout on the Wolf River once; I was amazed by their coloration.

But the trout fishing and the scenery is way better here in Colorado. Glad I made the move from the midwest. Is it still humid back there?...

Oh those are even better then creek chubs, they are fairly large common shiners in breeding color. Recently I have been looking at some of the 'other' fish so sorry about the ID correction.. Here is a great site for WI Fish ID
Some of the shiners and chubs have very pretty breeding colors. It's nice to read a story about someone being happy with the fish that were there.
