I really like that fly. Tied on a jig style hook so the barb rides in the up position, big eyes....looks "carpy". I would fish that for trout in a stream or a lake, in addition to warm water efforts.

Ribs, that mullberry hatch sounds like a "berry" good time. We have the cottonwood seed "fluff" hatch, which I missed this year. Sounds like you had a great day.

Hi Mark;

Congrats on landing a carp, it's on my list of species to catch! I've had a couple strikes but failed to keep the hook in thier mouth! This has to be one of the most exciting fish to catch on a flyrod.

Thanks all for the info on a quillback, I like others had never heard or seen that fish species prior to this.

Wacokid -

I honestly don't know the name of it....it's a commercial tied fly from my local big box........looked buggy as heck to me though and the carp, quill and sunnys agreed . I think the guys that actually know what they are doing would think this fly is too bright and they would chose something more drab and less likely to spook the fish.......I'm still so far down...

By the way, congratulations on your first Cyprinus carpio (common carp)!!!!! What fly did that "bugle bass" hit?? Sounds like you had fun catching that "golden bonefish". I will stop with the nicknames. Great photos!

Thanks for the info on Quills....I am a little embarrassed to have not looked it up myself prior to reading your post. I only knew that this was a Quill because my neighbor had told me that the location he suggested had Common Carp & Quills.....when I caught the Quill...I knew it wasn't a Carp and seeing the long spine on its dorsal concluded that "this was a Quill"

I especially love that quillback. It's a beautiful fish to me. I fish carp A LOT but I have never seen, nor heard of a quillback. I don't think we have them here.

Welcome to the dark side. Be forewarned, carp can be addictive, as can be suckers. I love a River Redhorse for sheer power, and the Quillback for exotic looks. Both are tough customers on a nymph; they are as spooky as any brown trout and even faster to spit a fly. Sometimes you have to set the hook before the fish hits! And welcome, too, to the art unfortunately misnamed "brownlining". Yes, there are many wonderful places to practice this sport right...

i fish for anything,anywhere.i'd stand in a puddle in the middle of the street with a piece of clothes line and a beer can as a lure if that was the only way i could fish.there is an urban river(the schuylkill)walking distance from my house.i'll run there for HALF hour sessions when that's all there's time for.

Nice hour of fishing. Love the quill back.
Wish the river that runs within walking distance from my home was clear enough to do some fly fishing. I'd take carp and quill backs on a fly anytime. Might have to go check it out to see if the mooneyes are below the dam, had a great time on them once years ago.

Everyone needs neighbors like that. Most of my fishing is one to two hour jaunts to local ponds late in the evening or on the way home from work. When I do get a whole day to go fishing, I'm almost lost with what to do first.

Looks like you are in the same boat I am in this spring/summer/fall. I have a 8 month old baby and mom has been discouraging my fishing pursuits. I do get out more than I should probably, but only for about an hour or two at a time. Judging from the pictures, you made the most of the time you had. Thanks for posting. -Rick

Bravo! Hey man with kids in the house being able to go fishing 3 times in one week for anything is no small miracle. Thank God for summer camp or I'd be fishing vicariously through this forum for the next three months.

Carp on a Bogdan? Well shoot the only way you can top that is to catch a sucker on the Hermann.

It's pretty well known here and on Clark's that "I don't get out much".........so it's with great surprise and much happiness that I've been out on the water three times in the last week

A good friend that's also my neighbor, and an excellent carp and trout fisherman, was kind enough to put me on a location a week or so ago that is less than 5 minutes...
