I was wondering what most people have used to strip the finish off of old reels, I recently got my hands on a beat up H&I reel that looks like a Medalist
and I think it would look pretty good with a new black paint job. I'd also like to change it from right hand to left hand retrieve but it doesn't look
like that will be easy.

Is the reel aluminum?...............

I have not done an vintage flyreel yet but have been doing some old vintage spinnig reels. I, from my perspective don't know (if you can get the old finish
off) what paint, finish etc., etc, you would put back on the reel that would look good and stay...?.... I haven't done one of my old fly reels yet that is
made of 'no telling' what type of alloys it is but I will beed blast and polish or beed blast and have a local buisness...

Thanks Evanslmtd, I was thinking about putting a clear coat on it, I may do that this next weekend. If I do put a clear coat on it I'll post some new
pictures in the other thread I made for the reel.

borumas
Glad to hear that the Citrus Strip worked for you. So far, it's never let me down.
You might want to think about shooting a coat or two of clear over the "Hammered Black" finish to help protect the paint. For me, the reels I've
done that on seem to hold up better than just the straight paint.

I just wanted to report the Citristrip worked pretty well, I should have taken some pictures of it but I've already started painting the reel. Hopefully it
will come out nicely, using a "hammered black" finish on it because I like the way it looks and it should help hide any scratches/blemishes on the
reel.

I like to start with Citristrip because it is less toxic. Follow the instructions. Wear gloves, do outdoors etc.

Occassionally, a better paint system needs to be stripped with a methylene chloride based stripper, which is more toxic. While, MC strippers are faster than
Citristrip, the toxicity is a concern for me.

Any stripper and plenty of steel wool. What doesn't come off after that won't come off under the new paint anyhow, and with progressively finer steel
wool, the surface will be well prepared to hold new paint.

It should flip over to LHW pretty easily, if its a true clone. Search in this forum on medalist and you'll be buried in how to.

I've used citristrip, abundant water and a good stiff brush to get the finish off some spools in the past. Might take more than one application so leave it
on for a few hours at least, rinse and brush, repeat if necessary. If for some reason you can't get to it to clean up, just drop it in the water to
neutralize things. I'd imagine any good...
