Yes, that Gowdy is basicly the same rod, just longer and with diff trim than the standard Parametrics. OK, where did you get one for $15??!??!
Those are nice rods, lighter than the Fenwicks, you will love it, or sell it to me for $5 profit.

I picked up a Curt Gowdy Signature PG-40 8'6" this month. It came with the original tube and sock for $15. Seems to throw a 7wt line very nicely while lawn casting on a windy day. I am hoping to test it on some bass next month during spring break. Is this the same rod that everyone is talking about but a longer length? I thought it was as nice as my Fenwick FF 807 or equal in casting in the backyard. I will give my impression of both when I actually test them on the water. Bill

Hmmmm... I'll have to pay closer attention next time I'm out with my 7ft Gowdy. Seems I remember primarily using the WF6.

I've got a 6'3" and I agree that it needs a little line out. Not sure what sort of "Southern Clave" is in the works, but if we're ever going to be in the same place, remind me and I'll bring it.

Thanks so much--that's actually a very illuminating review, especially since the 6'3" Para/Metric seems to have a reputation for needing a little line out of the guides before hitting its sweet spot. I'm down here in Dixie, but hopefully I've got another McFarland's clave in my future, so I might take you up on your offer!

CB, I'm not very well qualified to do a rod review. Best I can say is that it is very responsive and accurate in close and seems to "rise to the challenge" when longer casts are needed...almost like it has some reserve power when called upon. Flexes down into the grip where I can feel the blank itself flexing in my hand. Haven't pushed it for distance, but 30-60+ feet is a comfortable range for me. Mine is the 2 piece. It's nicely built...the grip a bit strange, but...

Any chance I could coax a rod review out of you regarding that 7-foot Para/Metric? I doubt I will ever see the 3-piece version, but I want to be ready if ever one comes up.

The 8.5ft 2pc is a more powerful rod, but still about the lightest in its class. Doesn't flex into the handle quite like the 8fter does. I like that extra bit of lenght. I spent the day fishing this rod ( by accident) with a 10wt sinking line, and had no problem.
THe 8.5 3pc is a tad heavier due to the extra ferrulle, and is also a tad slower. Mine has seen lots of time carp fishing among other things.

Mike, thanks again for the afternoon of casting. That was an amazingly fun and enlightening experience! I did notice my grip tightening on that Gowdy, but I thought it was because my fingers were freezing. Let's do it again. Of course I may need to cast that rod again, you know, just for old time's sake.

I'm not normally a fan of rods shorter than 7.5'. However, that 6' 3" parametric is fantastic. It has no problems roll casting or making longer casts. The taper is different from the 8 footers, so that may be why you don't like it as much.

as Cory mentioned, I don't consider the parametrics parbolic at all, nothing like a PHY parabolic. The 6'3" does have a parabolic feeling, but all the others I've ever cast were a nice progressive action. If I remember my facts correctly, the parametrics where the first rods designed using computers. I personally like the 8ft 6/7 2pc and 8'6" 7wt 3pc.

I had reluctantly sold my Gowdy PM 8ft....sure do miss it. But I've kept my 7ft Gowdy - my women, children and guns will go before this rod ever leaves my side. Very, very sweet with a DT5 or WF6 444.
