Hi-

I've been trying to tie-up some relatively simple Stonefly Nymphs but am having difficulty when it comes to spacing out the thorax and the 3 wing cases. I
tend to start the thorax too far back and the wing-cases end up getting spaced out too much. I don't think the fish will care so much but the tier
(that's me) is incredibly picky about how these flies look.

The fly I'm tying calls for 3 separate pieces of turkey tail, tied in along the thorax to form the wing-cases....

be just in my head but they seem to work better as the locals here have yellowish legs.

Fly Goddess, that's a really nice tie.

I will sometimes tie one without the biot legs when I need some stoneflies fast. This is easier and quicker; I just rough up the thorax dubbing and let it go
at that. In the photo, the fly is at an angle so you can't see the roughed up thorax on the bottom. I use brown or yellow/gold biots and only one
wingcase. I haven't found the trout to be too terribly fussy. The abdomen is gold dubbing and the thorax is gold ice dub....

Not sure exactly the pattern you are tying, but you might want to try making the wing pads before hand, and tying them over the thorax. Leave enough of your
pre made pads to be tied in, then tie in your thorax material/legs, then pull the pads over and wrap down. If possible (depending on the pattern), you can glue
to pads down for extra durability. Again, all this depends on your specific tie. Also, turkey can be a bit of a pain for splitting. You can usually sub rafia
for tukey. It is much...

Good ideas from Jeff. Sounds like you are doing Kauffman stone nymphs, or similar. You may want to actually mark the hook shank with a felt pen or a scrap of
feather or yarn at each tie-in point. Use a model fly or drawing as suggested until you get the proportions fixed in your mind. Practice, practice, practice.

I'm saying practice - stoneflies are tough at first.

One thing I did was draw pictures of the nymphs. That helped me get the proportions right; when my drawings looked right getting the fly to look right was
easier. Another technique is to use a model fly as an example. Take note of where the different body parts are on the example and copy. Use same style of
hook and use eye, bend, barb, and hook point as reference points. When you get it right, be consistent.
