Tom, The 702 and the T70 are identical in every way I can see. Same shape cork, same reel seat and wraps and nickel silver ferrules.

Long time no see! Welcome back! Your photos of early Heddons is what got me chasing the painted ones in the first place.

My 702 has a tip that is maybe 1/8" longer, probably because they didn't allow for the extra length of the tip top before mounting. I'm not sure that it would make as big a difference to the value as a short tip. There is something that just bugs me about short tips that doesn't bother me with short butts (I know, that...

702 owners......... I would like to know if the sections on your rods are the same length. I have a 7' 6" model that the wraps all look like they came from the factory, but the base is an inch shorter than the tip. I am thinking of selling the rod, but I would really like to know if it has been repaired or not. My 702 is an exact match to my T70 that I was told by Heddon was produced in 1954.

Heddon sure knew how to make beautiful rods. I buy most of my stuffon ebay, all the new stuff is made by the commies, including Orvis stuff, (except their rods)

Duff, I think most of the Heddon signatures were done by women and that may have been their only responsibility. Very unique way to complete a rod for sale. Tom, we should also consider the fact that after the 2nd world war the economy was booming compared to the earlier depression. People had jobs, were buying houses, flyrods and fishing were still really good. Glass was "new technology" back then.

Tom, your comment started me wondering if the brown Heddon Pro Pals were decaled. I say this because I just received an 8383 and compared the script to the one on Alpago's 8383 and there is a subtle difference - definitely not...

Heddon, Phillipson, Montague, and even Shakespeare were all building on their established cane rods with their fiberglass models. Conolon and Pacific Laminates (Silaflex) on the other hand were upstart companies that built their market share in fairly short order. Of the two, Conolon (eventually Garcia) grabbed a larger percentage of the market. I think Heddon led the way in marketing of their rods, I wonder who was their greatest competitor in glass? They certainly did a great job in putting together different models that would appeal to different consumers.

AG,

I have a G.F. 702 just like it, right down to the little "4.1" inked next to the hook keeper wraps. Your rod is in considerably better shape. Mine is worn around the edges, some of the wraps aren't original, and the grip is completely loose and spins around the rod blank. Because of the loose grip, I haven't test cast the rod.

I don't have any information for faux bamboo glass rods in the Wiki because I don't have any pre-1954 catalogs. I...

I saw that one too. At first I thought it was a Superlative Pal but it's not. It doesn't have the gold plated fittings. It's a beauty though. Heddon did a terrific job with the faux bamboo finishes. Gorgeous rod, AG. I bet those Grayling will like it.
