Hi All. This was my first glass fly rod. I actually found Fiberglassflyrodders when I was looking for information about this rod. It is a South Bend Classic
II, 1-438-280. It is an 8' 2 piece "Balanced for #6 Line" I know its not a "classic" but I like how it casts and fishes. It was and
still is in excellent shape. I just had to clean it up. I picked it up a couple years ago at a local antique store. It had an unmarked old, old brass reel on
it. I got the rod, reel...

Hey Tom & Larry, Thanks for the words of wisdom. So it sounds like color preservertive works as a sealer that protects the wraps from soaking up the
varnish and darkening. Yes, No? Anyway, I'm not a cheapskate, but if I can use something I have on hand or can buy at the hardware store rather than mail
order then I get excited. I do have Carver Tripp Water Based Urethane, but I'll take your advise and get the Olympic. Here's a shot of the female
ferrule wrap. It is actually the...

For this rod i would use OLYMPIC WATER BASED URETHANE for the color preserver. other water based urethanes don't preserve as well. or you could always use

Tom,

Spar varnish would be just fine. Superb in fact. But you may see some darkening of the thread where the finish is worn away. Usually, I would apply a couple
of coats of color preservative first - then a couple of coats of spar varnish. That would prevent the darkening. Try running a search for "color
preservative" on the Rod Building forum and you should get some hits for the threads on overcoating thread wraps.

Thanks. Two things regarding the wraps. This rod has metal ferrules, and the female one is wrapped right up to the end. I don't recall seeing that
elsewhere. I'll get a shot of that and add it later. The second thing is some of the wraps are showing some bare thread. What I mean is the clear coating
over the wraps has worn to where the thread is exposed. Being that it's a fishin' rod and not a collecters item I'm gonna go ahead and re-seal
them. My question is can I use...

That rod is in great shape! I have a couple of Shakespeare "Outdoorsmen" with the same grip, winding check, and decal (which, of course says
something else). Wraps are medium brown over gold foil. One is a pack rod.
The two piece isn't too bad with a 6 wt, very soft.
