The Pflueger Trump, model 576 fly reel is an unrecognized eBay gem. It's a small reel with a brown painted frame, a silver painted spool, and a plain clicker. Never a glamorous item, it doesn't have a disc drag, a palming rim, a deep dark anodized finish, or even a quick change spool. So why do I call it a gem? Because it's a simple, little reel that sells for chump change. Around half the Pflueger Trumps have a light aluminum frame and weigh about 3 1/4 ounces. The rest have a brass...

I only use these reels to hold test lines. I just live with the rachet wheels spinning. Lawn trout never take much line anyway. Once there is a line spooled
on the reel, the loose spool sides are no longer an issue.

I suppose other options may be epoxy or JB Weld. If I were feeling brave, I might try to solder between the brass and steel parts. Soldering might also cook
the paint on the aluminum parts, so only risk it if you dare.

ok,
I performed this "trick" on the Martin 67SSA just in time to take a trip to my buddy's bass pond.

Worked great!

My cork rings were only 1-1/4"d, however;
and I really could've used another 1/8" or so.
These Martins sure hold a lot of line!

But thanks to Tom for sharing this.
I do appreciate it.

Love the cork arbor. Like corlay, I wondered years ago if they would slip, but I never found that to be the case on the various ones I've made with cork
rings as shown. So I'm not fussy glueing them. Easiest way of all is to use sheet cork cut into strips very slightly wider than the spool (so the fit is
snug); then just wrap them around as many times as you want to add to the arbor diameter. the cork rings are classier and harken to the cork arbors on
baitcasting reels of old....

Corlay,

Make the hole in the cork a little smaller than the central arbor. As you load the backing, the cork will squeeze down on the arbor and keep everything solid.
If you need to, you could wrap a little double sided tape around the arbor too.

Hi Tom.

I was out on the lawn tonight getting a new Berkley PG40-8 ready for it's debut on the pond this weekend.
I paired it with a Martin 67SSA and it balances-out well with ~35yds. of backing and a Cortland 333 bass taper WF7F line.
The problem is, there's quite a lot of space left on the reel, and I don't want to suck it up by adding a bunch more backing;
because the balance is just right, right now.

Then I recalled this post, that I read...

Here is the final product - 4 reels with lines ready for use on the back lawn. I recently went to one of the Orvis traveling garage sales and bought 4 of their Green Mountain lines, one each in weights 4 thru 7. The lines were rather cheap, and I wanted them for dragging thru the grass rather than to use my good ones. I put each line on a Trump, added a leader and little yarn. Each setup weighs close to 4 ounces.

The only problem, Green Mountain lines are overweight. $%&#!...

Gaddis,

I had a couple with loose ratchet wheels also. My first approach was to literally hit it with a hammer. I still have the frame and screw if anyone needs a spare.

The successful solution was to clean the spool and superglue the loose parts. I degreased the spool with Dawn soap, rinsed with hot water, and blew it dry with compressed air. Then I dripped some thin superglue into the gaps between the spindle and the spool. I also added a drop between the brass spacer...

I've always had an affection for the Pflueger Trump reel, mostly because I once seriously craved a Trump fly rod & reel outfit as a kid. I've got two of them now. I didn't know about the different materials used for the reel. I'll have to weigh mine and see. It's interesting to note that the matching Trump rod was rated for a 7-weight line, so that accounts for the large spool capacity.

One problem I've noticed with the Trump fly reel is that the ratchet on the inner side of...
